Off Grid RV Solar Panels

There is a lot to explore in RV Solar Panels.  Links on the sidebar will take you to other related content about Solar Panel Kits.

And, before we head off to explore Off Grid Solar Panel Kits for RV’s and Homes, you can click here if you want to head straight to the Best Solar Panel Kits.

Many RV and Off-grid Cabin owners look for a complete Off Grid Solar Kit. These Solar Panel Kits are customized and optimized for off grid usage.

An Off Grid Solar Kit has to operate off road, in the woods, in remote areas etc. without access to the ubiquitous power sockets we so take for granted.

As a result, Off Grid Solar Panel Kits need additional capabilities. The most important Off Grid Solar Kit requirement is storage. The RV or Off-Grid Cabin owner needs to have power at all times and this means Batteries.

Solar Panel Kits – Components

Off Grid Home RV Solar Panel Kit Components
The main components of any Off Grid Solar Panel Kit / RV Solar Panel Kit are the following : Solar Panels connected to a Solar Charge Controller. The Solar Charge Controller is connected to the Battery or Batteries. The Battery or Batteries are then connected to an Inverter.

The Inverter will then provide AC power to the RV or the Off-Grid Cabin. Thus, a complete Off Grid Solar Panel Kit is quite a collection of Solar Components.

Even experienced DIY veterans should take advice from an experienced electrician while installing an Off Grid Solar Panel System or even your own RV Solar Panel Kit.

Let look a few Off Grid Solar Kits – a few are available as a complete kit and a few are built using components available on Amazon.

Off Grid DIY RV Solar Panel Kit (Large) – Inergy Kodiak based Off Grid Solar Panel Kit – Daily Power Usage of 5000 watts

Off Grid Solar Kit (Large) for Home RVOff Grid Solar Kit (Large)a) Inergy Kodiak 1100 Solar Generator

b)Four (4)12V, 125 AH Vmaxtanks SLR125 AGM Batteries

c)Six (6) Inergy Solar Storm 100 Watt Solar Panels

This is a non standard DIY Off Grid Solar Panel  Kit you can build by buying off the shelf components on Amazon.

This large Off Grid DIY Solar Panel Kit is powered by the Inergy Kodiak 1100 watt hour Solar Generator. Adding 4 additional 12V, 125 AH Vmaxtanks SLR125 AGM batteries increases the storage capacity to 6700 watts of storage.

The Inergy is an outstanding product and has great reviews on Amazon. Even thought this solar panel kit is pricey, it is great value for money given its small size and long life expectancy.

The Batteries must be connected in parallel to the Inergy Kodiak. For charging your Inergy and the Batteries, you will need 6, Inergy Solar Storm 100 Watt Solar Panels. The Solar Panels must all be connected in parallel as well.

But, for best results and long battery life, you should use 5000 watts or less in a day and that would take about 8 hours of recharging by the solar panels. Be aware that you have to get Inergy Solar Panels as they come with Neutrik cables. See below if you plan to use other panels.

If you plan to use another brand of solar panels, please ensure their open circuit Voltage or V oc is 30 volts or less, and you would need Neutrik to MC4 adaptors. Here is a link to the components of this Off Grid Solar Panel Kit.

There will be additional cables and connectors required for this kit. It is advisable to have an electrician install it or help you install this kit.

Finally, for this Solar Panel Kit, you can mix and match. You can start with just the Inergy Kodiak and one Solar Panel and add more batteries and Solar Panels as you see fit. This is probably the easiest way to go off grid with your own Solar Panel Kit, though the Inergy is a little expensive.

Off Grid DIY RV Solar Panel Kit (Medium)

Windy Nation 400 watt Off Grid Solar Panel Kit – Daily Power Usage of 2400 watts – Excellent RV Solar Panel Kit as well

This kit has 4800 watts of storage thanks to four 12V, 100 Amp hour BattaMax AGM Batteries. The 4 solar panels (100 watt off grid solar panels) will produce around 400 watts per hour under bright sunlight.

With 6 hours of sunlight the panels will generate 2400 watts every day. As long as your off-grid power usage in the RV or Cabin is 2400 watt hour or less, this configuration will work for you.

Using more than 2200 watts a day will deplete the batteries, unless you allow them to be recharged the next day. If you are not careful, you will end up running down your batteries completely in a few days.

The VertaMax Inverter is rated at 1500 watts output (with a surge of 3000 watts) and the Solar Charge Controller is the 30-amp P30L Solar Charge Controller with LCD Display.

Camping Solar Panel Kits

Camping Solar panel kits also let you stay off grid and you need not  be connected to the grid/ the utility company. They are normally used for a short term off grid experience. Most off the shelf camping solar panel kits are great for keeping a couple of lights on for the night and for charging your phones and laptops and keeping you warm under your electric blanket.

Larger camping Solar Panel Kits can also power a few emergency lights, a boombox and a small mini fridge. The heavy duty Solar Power Kits (over 1000 W) can take care of additional loads like running a fridge, your computers and the lights and appliances.

If you want to power your home the heavy duty kits are an option or you have to look at getting them custom designed. Click here if you want to go directly to the reviews.

Camping Solar Panel Kits : System Sizing Rules of Thumb

The most important number for our rule of thumb is the number of watts produced by the solar panel kit. Each kit will have a rating in watts. A 10W solar panel kit for example is a hobby / phone charging kit and a large 3000 watt kit will power most RV’s and boats easily.

The second number to look at is the rating of the included solar panels; that rating is also in watts, so careful, don’t confuse the two and make sure you look at both and make a note.

The third number to look at is the rating on the batteries. Most boat and RV batteries are 12V and their capacity will be in Amp hours.

Solar Panel Kits : Hobby,  Education, Mobile charging station
  • Overall Solar Panel Kit Watts : 10 watts to 60 watts
  • Included solar panel kit watts  : Panels rated from 10 watts to 50 watts
  • Batteries : 1 or 2 batteries, 12 V rated 35 Amp hours ( between 50 and 70 amp hours) – Most small RV Solar Panel kits don’t come with batteries
Solar Panel Kits : Trailers, Fifth Wheel, One room cabin
  • Overall Solar Panel Kit Watts : Minimum of 100 watts
  • Included solar panel kit watts  : Two or more panels each rated between 50 and 100 watts (Total at least 100 watts)
  • Batteries : 1 or 2 batteries, 12 V rated 50 Amp hours each ( 100 amp hr is desirable, but 50AH could do as well )
RV Solar Panel Kits : Motorhome, Camping, Two Room cabin
  • Overall Solar Panel Kit Watts : Minimum of 200 watts
  • Included solar panel kit watts  : 4 or more panels each rated 60 watts or 5 or more 50 watt panels or 2 or more 100 watt panels (Total 250 watts or more)
  • Batteries : 2 or more batteries, 12 V rated 50 Amp hours (at least 100 amp hr or more)
RV Solar Panel Kits : Small RV, Boats, Loft
  • Overall Solar Panel Kit Watts : Between 300  to 600 watts
  • Included solar panel kit watts  : Panel Watts between 400 to 700 watts
  • Batteries : Atleast 200 Amp hour battery capacity
Solar Panel Kits : Mid Sized RV, Boats, Loft
  • Overall Solar Panel Kit Watts : Minimum of 800 watts
  • Included solar panel kit watts  : 3 or more panels each rated 250 watts (minimum 750 watts)
  • Batteries : Battery bank of 400 amp hours or more
Solar Panel Kits : Large RV, Boats, small apartment
  • Overall Solar Panel Kit Watts : 1000 watts and higher
  • Included solar panel kit watts  : 4 or more panels each rated 250 watts (Total 1000 watts or more)
  • Batteries : Battery bank of 1200 amp hours or higher

Inside a Solar Panel Kit

Solar Panels are attached to a bank of batteries which are kept fully charged and provide your home or cottage or RV or boat with a continuous reliable supply of electricity. Unfortunately the kits don’t come with the batteries.rv solar panel kits

Batteries : You will have to buy the batteries separately. The Solar Panel Kits come equipped with one or more solar panels or solar modules that are built using mono crystalline or poly crystalline silicon solar cells, a solar charge controller, wires with proper connectors and mounting hardware.

Solar Charge Controller : The Solar Charge Controller is included in the package. The controller acts as the go between the solar panels and the batteries. The charge controller ensures that the battery is charged correctly with the charging current and voltage appropriate for the bank of batteries.

Batteries can be damaged or cause an accident if they are over charged or under charged or if they are fed incorrect voltage and current inputs. The charge control automates the charging process and ensures the batteries are properly charged.

Mounting Kit : Most solar kits will also come with a mounting kit for the solar panels. These are usually brackets and nuts and bolts required to mount a solar panel onto a roof or any other flat surface. To summarize, a Solar Power Kit will have the following key components :

  • Solar Panels or Solar Modules. More modules means greater power output and thus ability to handle bigger power loads.
  • Solar Charge Controller. The Modules are connected to the batteries via the Solar Charge Controller.
  • Mounting Hardware for the Solar Panels for Roof or Pole Mount.

BATTERIES are EXTRA and are not normally part of the Solar Panel Kit.

  • Battery Bank. The Solar Modules keep the Battery Bank (a bunch of batteries) charged at all times.
  • Inverter. An inverter is normally not included in the solar panel kit, though some do have one. The inverter converts the DC output of your battery or solar panel into AC current.

Solar Panel Kits need careful handling. You must be prepared and exercise caution while installing and running a Solar Panel Kit based system.

What is the difference between a Solar Panel Kit and a Solar Generator ?

A Solar Panel Kit with an integrated battery and in many cases integrated inverter packaged into a briefcase or a stylish case with DC and even AC outputs for your phones, laptop and appliances is called a Solar Generator. So the main difference between Solar Panel Kits and Solar Generators is size, power output, the in built batteries and the outlets which come standard in solar generators .

Solar Generators are more of a reliable backup power for emergencies like power outages or for outdoor activities like camping. Solar Panel Kits can be used as a primary source of power for your cabin or home. You don’t need to be connected to the power/utility company/grid. You can even go off-grid with the solar panel kits as long as you have enough power stored in the battery bank.

You cant go off grid with a Solar Generator; the most you can do is go on a day or two of camping or use it as emergency backup during those power outages. There are some smaller Solar Panel Kits which provide the same power output as Solar Generators. However, if you are looking for the lower power output solution, its better to go the Solar Generator route. The Solar Panel Kits make more sense if you are looking for a more permanent and a larger power output solution.

Check our solar generator page for more on different options.

IMPORTANT : This solar panels kit is a grid-tied unit. You will need to be connected to the grid for this solar panel kit to work. In most towns in the United States you would need to get a permit from the township as well as a permission to operate from your utility company. A professional electrician with solar experience might be your best bet to have this installed and permitted.

Plugged Solar 1500W Grid Tie Solar Panel Kit

Best Solar Panels Plugged Solar
The Plugged Solar 1500W grid tied solar panel kit is ready to be connected to the grid through a dedicated wall socket in your home. The Plugged Solar grid tied kit is as close to plug and play as you can get with a solar panel kit. The unit ships with six 240W solar modules.

Each module has its own micro inverter which is made by Northern Electric & Power and is ETL certified with UL-1741 code. The DC output of the solar modules is converter to AC by the micro inverters under each solar panel. The combined output of the six panels is then fed to your home through a dedicated wall socket.

You will have to get appropriate township and utility permissions if you want to sell power back to the grid using net metering. ( selling excess power produced by the solar system back to the utility company)

Finally a word of caution. Solar Panel Kits require careful installation and attention to detail. Here is a short note on various precautions you need to be aware of.

PRECAUTIONS

SET UP – Please be very careful when you connect your solar panels to your charge controller and the charge controller to your battery bank and your battery bank to the inverter. If you connect the positive and negative terminals incorrectly you will likely damage your solar panels as well as the charge controller and inverter. Be very careful and follow the kit manufacturers instructions. Here are some general guidelines.

  1. Start with the solar charge controller – connect its positive and negative output terminals to the positive and negative terminals of the battery bank using the AWG tray cable.
  2. Next step : Connect the inverter to the battery bank with care to match the positive and negative terminals. If your kit does not include an inverter, connect to the load i.e. the device or devices you plan to charge using the batteries.
  3. Finally make sure the solar panels are covered or are not exposed to direct sunlight so that they are not generating power. Now, connect the MC4 Adaptor kit to the solar panels. Then carefully connect the positive and negative ends of the adaptor kit to the solar charger controller’s positive and negative input connection terminals.

Precautions when working with batteries of the Solar Panel Kit

Most Solar Panel Kits come with Batteries that contain very corrosive acids as an electrolyte. Proper attire such as gloves, eye glasses etc should be used and ever precaution taken to prevent contact with skin, eyes, or clothing.

During the charging cycle of these batteries hydrogen and oxygen are produced. This is a potentially explosive mixture. It is very important to keep the battery banks properly vented to dissipate the explosive gases. Remember never to smoke or allow a spark or flame near the batteries.

Precautions when working with the solar modules of the Solar Panels Kit

A solar panel converts the energy from sunlight into DC or direct current. The output from the solar panels are usually fed into a junction box which is fixed to the back face of the solar panel. A PV wire is connected to the junction box and the other end usually has MC4 connectors which can be connect to a Solar Charge controller.

Its important to realize that when sunlight falls on the panel, there is a voltage across the terminal of the MC4 connector and at the junction box. To avoid a shock the solar panel should be covered with an opaque (dark) material such as paper or cloth during the installation.

Precautions when working with charge controllers

The charge controller is a very important part of the solar panels kit. It controls the charging of the batteries and also the output from the solar panels. Charge controllers usually have a current rating and it is important that the output from the solar panels of your solar panels kit should not exceed 80% of the charge controller current rating. If two or more solar panels are connected in a series/parallel it is essential that the short circuit current ratings of all panel strings does not exceed 80% of the charge controller’s current. For example a 30 amp charge controller can accept a maximum output of 24 amps from the panels.

Similarly the voltages of the solar panels or array in your solar panels kit must be matched to the charge controller voltage rating. The open circuit voltage of the solar array (i.e. the maximum voltage across the array) should not exceed 26V when there is a 12V setting on the charge controller , and may not exceed 52V when the 24V setting on the charge controller is used.

General Safety and Maintenance

Keeping the solar panels or modules of your solar panels kit clean is not mandatory but it can lead to better output because dust, dirt and other pollutants cause lower amount of sunlight reaching the panels. to reach the and make sure the surfaces are free from dust, dirt, and other
Its also important to have the major components and cables are in clean well mentioned conditions. Structural components, fasteners, and electrical connections must be clean, secure and corrosion-free.

Solar Panel Kits normally don’t come with batteries. However they are a crucial component of all solar panel kits as they are the key to going off grid. If you want your batteries to last long, Its is really important to have electrolyte levels as per manufacturers recommendations. If necessary the electrolyte levels should be topped off regularly.
