Rayton Solar led by CEO Andrew Yakub a UC Santa Barbara alum and member of the Forbes 30 under 30 list for 2016 is bringing revolutionary new solar panel technology to the market. A quick 101 on solar panels; solar panels are essentially created by creating a layer of silicon by slicing a thin strip of a silicon ingot. Rayton has been able to leverage particle accelerator technology to aid in the slicing of pure silicon wafter. Rayton’s silicon wafers are just 3 microns thick compared to the current industry standard of around 200 microns. This advanced new solar panel technology allows Raytoton make 100 solar panels with the same amount of silicon currently used in 1 solar panel. Imagine that, use the same raw material to produce 100 solar panels instead of 1. Rayton is confident of reducing costs by 60% or more over conventional panels.
The new solar panel technology also enables Rayton to use the most pure grade of silicon available in the world – Float Zone Silicon. Currently such pure grade silicon is used only by NASA on their space program because of prohibitive costs. Since you need so very little silicon, Rayton will be able to use Float Zone Silicon on their standard solar panels and this would increase the panels efficiency to 24% from the current 19% range. Higher efficiency panels means you need less panels to make the same amount of power. Rayton’s assessment is that it would cut the number of panels needed by 25% and lower costs by up to 60%. This is a killer combination and I am hoping this new solar panel technology will make solar cheaper than every other source of power – be it coal, nuclear or natural gas.
