Customer Review : Tri Fuel Generator Conversion Kit : "It was an easy install it's working great. No messy carburetor or stinky gasoline, I went for the option to go propane or gasoline."

Why buy a Tri Fuel Generator ?

Why buy a Tri Fuel Generator ?  Couple of reasons actually; one its great in emergency situations like the aftermath of a storm or hurricane. Gasoline lines are huge : power on using natural gas, or get a propane cylinder from Walmart.

Next, a tri fuel generator gives you a break from smelly gasoline and gummed up Carburetors. So, most users will rely on  natural gas which is cheaper and cleaner.

Or the easier options if for you switch to Propane which you can buy from any neighborhood store. Thus you are much better prepared than any of your neighbors during the aftermath of a Harvey or worse with your Tri Fuel Generator.

Tri Fuel Generators are a versatile portable generator that can be used at home or while you go out camping or on a job site. And its at its best during emergency outages when long gasoline lines make gasoline portable generators next to useless.

Buying a Tri Fuel Generator can be a little daunting. Even savvy buyers need to be look out for a few key features before making the best buying choice of a Tri Fuel Generator.

Tri Fuel Generator Hookup

Tri Fuel Generator Kohler

Tri Fuel Generator Kohler

Unlike Regular Portable Generators,  that have a Gasoline Tank, you have additional hookup requirements for both Natural Gas as well as Propane (LPG) operated Tri Fuel Generator.

Running it on Propane (LPG) is easy requires a Propane Hose. Make suer that is part of your Tri Fuel Generator Kit.

You can normally fit any size of LPG (Propane) tank to your tri fuel generator as long as you have the correct size of Propane Hose and maintain the right pressure. Most Tri Fuel Generator Manuals come with excellent instruction manuals for the hook ups.

Tri Fuel Generator Propane Hose

Tri Fuel Generator Propane Hose

The natural Gas-Hook Up might require the services of a plumber/gas technician as you would have get it connected to the utility gas pipes. Of course many buyers don't even go there and are happy with the Gasoline and Propane options.

If that sounds like you, check out the Dual Fuel Generators, they might be more power at a lower price point.

Tri Fuel Generator : Other Key Features

What kind of fuel capacity does the Tri Fuel Generator have? How long will it run at full load and at half load? Good answers are over 7 gallons and 8 hours or more on 50% load.

Power Outlets – Make sure your Tri Fuel Generator has the standard 5-20R 120 Volt outlets as well as the twist and lock 120 or 240 volt  L14-30R outlet. More outlets give you greater flexibility and ability to multi task.

A Quick Start feature to get you going in a jiffy is very convenient, along with a manual backup start option.  Wheels and Handles are another key element to look at.  Some units are heavy and the ability to add wheels easily is essential.

Don’t forget to look at the manufacturer’s reputation for service and quality. Customer Reviews on the best Tri Fuel generators will always be reliable. Look at them on Amazon as well as here in this Article.

 Safety Features

The key safety features you should look for are :

Outlet and Output covers that are protected from the elements as well as dust should come standard.
Overload Protection with Circuit breakers is a must have safety feature.

In order to keep your Tri Fuel generator going for a long time, it must have Automatic shut-off when its engine oil levels deplete below safe levels. Not having Auto Shut-off will eventually lead to engine damage. Silent Operation is always desirable, so look for mufflers which keep the engines quiet.

Customer Review : Duro Max Dual Fuel Generator

Mark in Florida : “We used this Generator in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma and this has been an excellent investment.

The generator ran for five full days it did not give us any trouble. First off it ran on propane from a 100 lb tank.  Other than some condensation at the bottom of the propane tank  it handled the load without a hiccup.

I rant a 4 ton A/C , a well and two refrigerators.  I did not run the on-demand electric water heaters as they are too high a load for Generators.  The lights do dim when the  4 ton A/C unit starts, but that is to be expected.

We also used our double oven and stove top but not together with the AC.

Once we ran out of propane, we switched to gasoline and it ran without a refill for 12 hours overnight.

The wheels are made of solid plastic and they are not good, I replaced them with tires.  It does not have a load indicator but the generator starts quickly and easily using the electric start.

Make sure you change the oil every 20 hours or monthly as a engine with dirty oil will cause overheating and eventually break down the unit. Very Happy Overall.”

FAQs

What advantages does a Tri Fuel Generator have over natural gas-based whole house generators?

Whole House Natural Gas Generators are fixed installs and require expensive on site maintenanc and repairs. They are vastly more expensive.

Tri Fuel Generators can be run when you need them and on the cheapest and more importantly most easily available fuel during a crises situation.  Another major advantage is the ability to swap it out for repairs in the unlikely situation of a breakdown.

What about maintenance for the Tri Fuel Generator ?

Since a Tri Fuel Generator also runs on Gas, it requires the regular  maintenance that you would recommend for Gas Generators.  You  would need to change the Oil and  Oil Filter after the first 50 hrs of use.

Thereafter, it is good practice to change them every 200 hrs . The other item that requires maintenance are the Spark Plug and Air Filter; they should be cleaned  periodically too.

Can you add more power, will the Tri Fuel Generator oblige?

Most Tri Fuel Generators allow for additional synchronized AC coupled Generators to be daisy chained on to add to the power output.  But check before you couple with other generators.

What about wiring the Tri Fuel Generator ?
You have the option of getting a transfer switch installed with a sub panel for your critical loads. That is an electricians job, but a good investment.  Other wise you are stuck with Long Power Cords and Power Strips.

Can I heat my home with the Tri Fuel Generator?
Most Popular Tri Fuel Generators should be able to run the smaller sized gas furnaces and heat pumps. It does help to do a little bit of load planning, but you should have your heat and hot water during an outage with your new Tri Fuel Generator.

Is the power clean to run my computers and other sensitive devices?
Check your Tri Fuel Generator Specifications. If it says that the AC output is pure sine wave, you can use the AC output on every thing.  If not I would go easy on sensitive electronics, unless you are ok with buzzing from your music equipment.  Laptops are quite hardy and should work with non sine wave AC power as well.

What happens if the Tri Fuel Generator breaks down?
Cart away the unit after unplugging it to the nearest repair shop. They are fairly simple and can be easily repaired.  Having a  spare portable generator might also be a good idea.
