1. The “Expiring Offer” Pressure
No legitimate solar incentive expires at midnight. SREC programs and utility rebates have defined enrollment periods — not same-day deadlines. Any salesperson telling you the deal expires tonight is using a pressure tactic.
2. The “Free Solar” Promise
“Go solar for free” always means a lease or PPA where someone else owns the panels. You get cheaper electricity — but you don’t own anything, you don’t get SRECs, and you may have complications selling your home.
3. The Inflated Utility Bill Projection
Showing you a utility bill projection that assumes 5–7% annual rate increases makes the solar savings look better. Ask what rate increase assumption is built into their model — and compare it to your utility’s actual historical increases.
4. The Handshake Roof Warranty
Every installer should provide a written workmanship warranty covering roof penetrations. If it’s verbal or not in the contract, it doesn’t exist.
5. Unlicensed Subcontractors
Large national solar companies often subcontract the actual installation to local crews. Ask specifically: who is physically installing your system, are they employees or subcontractors, and what are their NJ electrical and roofing licenses?
6. The Missing Permit
Every solar installation in NJ requires permits from your municipality and utility interconnection approval. If an installer suggests skipping permits to save time or money, walk away.
7. The Unregistered SREC Account
Your SREC income requires registration in New Jersey’s GATS (Generation Attribute Tracking System). Confirm your installer handles this registration as part of the job. Some don’t — and homeowners miss years of SREC payments as a result.
